TIBI RESORT 2012

It's Resort Collection time.  For the season that takes us from spring through early fall, I really liked the easy-going looks.  They carry you from day to night with minimal fuss.

That brings us to Tibi's collection.  So simple, yet with a pop of orange when needed.

ZANY DAY COLOR

It is pouring outside.  As I head out to meet with architects, I decide to throw off their zen designs by donning huge swathes of colorful solids.

I had completely forgotten about my orange, rabbit fur scarf from Vail until I saw Prada's Cat in the Hat fur accents.

SPRING FOR BLACK & WHITE

Right now, I am just loving the classic Black & White combination for spring.  We even saw it continued for the Fall 2011 collections, propelling the trend towards minimal and graphic color blocking.

See the detail from Celine's Fall collection:

Hmm, I am especially fond of that doctor bag shape she's carrying.

For those, myself included, who have been overusing our black turtlenecks, BCBG Max Azria now allows us to layer our white turtlenecks under black outfits.  No longer do nuns and priests have sole claim to this sartorial look.

But remember to add some heels or slick boots.  You're aiming for sexy, not saintly.

The great thing about black & white is that it can be easily achieved through layers.  The outfit doesn't have to come all "done" like a pair of spectator pumps.  Of course, it is nice to have the black-white accent put together already, like this clutch:

Pulling off black and white is angst-free.  Coco Chanel taught us how to do it --timelessly -- with ease.  If all you have is black, it's can be as simple as adding strands of pearls.

COLOR BLOCKED SPRING

Spring is in the air.  That is, here on the West Coast.  Our thoughts begin to turn to vibrant colors, or the perennial springtime combination, black-and-white.

A surprise trend that came off the Spring runways is Color Blocking.  Nothing new, mind you.  Back in 1965, Yves Saint Laurent drew from the Art world and blocked out the famous Mondrian dress:

Stefano Pilati built on YSL's heritage and put forth some graphic black-and-white color blocking for Spring 2011.

But other designers, including the very young and fairly new Prabal Gurung, showed geometric color blocks.

Even the tried-and-true Christian Louboutin went color-wild (beyond the fire-engine red soles) in his Spring 2011 collection.

For those used to monochrome looks, particularly of the black hue, this may be a stretch.  But you may be ready to infuse your winter wardrobe with color.  This is simpler than it seems.  In fact, it's much easier than introducing prints.

Hint: Contrast solids across your outfit (see Prada below) and there you can begin.
